Issue #0 — Drops landed, and DMs are talking
A new newsletter for Dungeon Masters. This week — what the May Drops launch actually changed, the 7-hour-session post-mortem, and where CoopTell goes from here.
Hi — this is the first issue of the CoopTell DM newsletter. Once a week. No spam, no upsells.
Top 3 DM tips this week
1. Open with a forcing function. Most "long session" advice is "have snacks." That's true but useless. The real fix is structural: don't treat the first hour as warm-up. Open with a hook the party can't ignore and can't resolve in five minutes. (Full write-up.)
2. Prep the exit ramp before the set piece. Big combats run long. Always have a way the encounter can resolve in 90 minutes — negotiation, retreat, environmental escape. Without it, Block 3 eats Block 4 and you rush the most important narrative beat.
3. Cut Block 2, not Block 3. When you're behind on time, players will tell you it's fine to skip the big fight. They are wrong. They'll remember the fight forever; they'll remember the investigation as "that night that ran long." Trim social, keep the set piece.
Tool release notes
- Pricing page is live: cooptell.com/pricing. Free tier is the same as before — 15 AI portraits/mo, marketplace browsing, full beat workflow.
- Blog is live: cooptell.com/blog. One post out, more coming.
- NPC TTS (per-NPC voices via ai.lan) is in beta. Toggle it on under admin features if you want a sneak peek.
Drops backlash — what we're hearing
A week into the D&D Beyond Drops launch and the Reddit + HN chatter is more interesting than the marketing. Three patterns we keep seeing in DM-pain signals (filed into our intel pipeline):
- Subscription fatigue. DMs running a single home table don't want a new monthly bill. "Why is this not a one-time purchase?" appears in almost every Drops thread.
- Workflow lock-in. People who already moved campaign notes to Foundry or Notion don't want to migrate again.
- Mobile prep gap. Drops is desktop-first; lots of DMs prep on phones.
CoopTell is leaning hard into all three — free tier that's actually usable, JSON import/export so your data stays yours, and a mobile-responsive prep flow shipping next month.
Community spotlight
Going light on this until we have community feedback to spotlight. If you're a DM who has shipped or written something cool for your table this month — reply and tell us about it.
Until next week
If you want to chat, reply to this email — every reply goes straight to House. If something in CoopTell is broken or missing, tell us; the next release notes section will be longer because of you.
